The role of terpenes in CBD and their potential benefits
CBD, or cannabidiol, has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its potential health benefits. CBD is one of over 100 compounds, known as cannabinoids, found in the cannabis plant. While much of the focus has been on CBD and THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, there are other compounds in the plant that may have important therapeutic benefits, including terpenes.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, including cannabis. They are responsible for the distinctive smells and flavors of different strains of cannabis. Terpenes are not unique to cannabis; they are found in many other plants, including fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
While terpenes are not as well-known as cannabinoids, they may play an important role in the therapeutic effects of cannabis. Some researchers believe that terpenes may work synergistically with cannabinoids to enhance their therapeutic benefits. Here are some potential benefits of terpenes in CBD:
-
Enhanced therapeutic effects: Terpenes may enhance the therapeutic effects of CBD by working together with cannabinoids. For example, some terpenes have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may enhance the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD.
-
Improved absorption: Some terpenes may improve the absorption of cannabinoids, allowing them to be more effective. For example, one study found that the terpene myrcene increased the absorption of cannabinoids through the blood-brain barrier.
-
Mood enhancement: Terpenes may also have mood-enhancing effects. For example, some terpenes, such as limonene and linalool, have been shown to have anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects.
-
Pain relief: Some terpenes, such as beta-caryophyllene, may have analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. This may enhance the pain-relieving effects of CBD, making it more effective for conditions such as chronic pain.
-
Anti-inflammatory properties: Many terpenes have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be beneficial for conditions such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. For example, beta-caryophyllene has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects.
Overall, the role of terpenes in CBD is an area of active research. While more studies are needed to fully understand the potential benefits of terpenes, there is evidence to suggest that they may enhance the therapeutic effects of CBD. When choosing a CBD product, it is important to look for one that contains a full-spectrum extract, which will contain a range of cannabinoids and terpenes for maximum therapeutic benefit.
Hi, I have had fibromyalgia for a long time now and do not take medication as nothing really helps. I have been taking CBD oil @ 60% but this is having little impact on the pain!
I have been researching terpenes and it seems that Beta-Caryophyllene may be of benefit to me.
I’d be grateful for your advice re dosage and is it better to take it orally or vape.
Thank you
Kind regards
Marian
