What causes sleeplessness and Insomnia?
We don’t need to spout on about the importance of a good night’s sleep, you already know how important that is. It has been recommended by health professionals that the average adult should get, between 7 to 9 hours sleep. It is our body’s time to heal, repair and recuperate for the next day. Poor sleep can lead to severe and sometimes chronic health conditions, so getting the correct sleep routine organised for yourself, is the ultimate way to begin your self-care journey.
Insomnia is when you have difficulty getting to sleep or even staying asleep, long enough to feel refreshed for the next day. It is one of the most common complaints Doctors receive.
There is no set cause for Insomnia but these are often factors that can trigger it; anxiety, depression, noise, temperature of the room, uncomfortable bed, caffeine and poor shift patterns at work.
If you relate with any of the situations below, you are probably already suffering from one of these;
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking up several times during the night
- Lying awake at night
- Feeling tired after waking up
- Irritable feelings throughout the day
- Difficulty concentrating in the day
If any of this sounds far too familiar it is time to shake up your sleep routine and get the restful night sleep you deserve.
CBD and Insomnia
Our bodies have a natural endocannabinoid system, which plays a vital role in maintaining vital functions such as; mood, appetite, sleep and regulating natural sleep/wake rhythms. In the endocannabinoid system there is a network of receptors. Cannabinoids attach to these cells resulting in the various positive effects of CBD use.
In the UK market, it is illegal to sell CBD with a THC content above 0.2%. THC is the chemical in cannabis responsible for the infamous ‘high’. CBD is safe and has very few side affects so is great for first time users who want the benefits without the 'high' feeling.
A common cause of sleeplessness and Insomnia is, of course, anxiety and stress. Long-term use of CBD has been proven to reduce certain symptoms of stress leading to a more restful and beneficial nights sleep. Research actually shows that CBD has calming effect on the nervous system and it can also alter mood as it affects the body’s serotonin system too. Some preliminary, studies claim that CBD has also reduced nightmares associated with PTSD, improving the sleep among users with chronic pain conditions too.
In a clinical study, 72 adults with anxiety and poor sleep were given 25mg capsules of CBD. After the first month alone, anxiety scores decreased in 79% of participants as well as sleep score improving by 66%. Research is ongoing and we are only here to give you the most up to date and reliable advice.
Overall CBD works to address the underlying and common causes of poor sleep such as anxiety, stress, pain and depression at the root rather than just masking the problem.
